Hardening vSphere 5.0

vsphere5
Hello folks

This is another article about vSphere virtualization environment and I want to talk about hardening processes for ESXi 5 in this article. By design, ESXi 5 has a very small attacking surface and is a relatively secure platform. But further hardening can be performed on ESXi hosts and virtual machines to make virtualization infrastructure more secure (and that is a good thing). Third party products can be used for security reasons but today  our topic will be the basic configuration changes that we can make on vSphere environment itself for a more secure platform.

In the previous article, I talked about the installation of VMware vSphere Update Manager (VUM) 5.0. In this article, I want to explain the basic configuration options that we can play with and how we can apply patches to host machines via VUM. In previous version of VUM, virtual machines can be patched also. But in this version, we can only patch hosts, upgrade hosts and perform VMware Tools / Virtual Machine hardware upgrade operations. So lets begin with the basic configuration options we have.

VMware vSphere Update Manager (VUM) 5.0 Installation

vsphere5

Throughout the last three articles, I’ve talked about the installations of ESXi 5, vCenter Server and vSphere Client. Actually these three components of VMware virtualization are sufficient to build and manage your basic virtual environment. But as any operating system in IT world, ESXi virtualization software also needs updates against the vulnerabilities and bugs. VMware vSphere Update Manager 5 was written for updating ESXi 5 and ESX 4/3.5 host machines and vmtools/hardware version of the virtual machines in your environment. Believe me, it must be a permanent component in your vSphere environment. In this article I will try to explain the installation of VMware vSphere Update Manager 5 component.

Hi folks

This is the third and the last part of our article series about MS SQL Server 2008 R2 clustering and untill now we completed the creation of virtual machines and Windows clustering on them. In this last part, I will install MS SQL Server 2008 R2 on these virtual clustered machines. But first of all, I want to talk a little bit about MS SQL Server clustering options.

Clustering MS SQL Server 2008 R2 on VMware Virtual Windows Server 2008 R2 – 2

Hi folks

This is the second part of our three part article series about MS SQL Server 2008 R2 clustering. In the first part , I created Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machines in vSphere 4 environment. In this part, I will build the cluster infrastructure,  means create a two-node Windows cluster. Lets start with the requirements for failover cluster creation.
