Outlook Web App access in an Exchange 2010 – Exchange 2003 coexistence scenario

Exchange Server 2010

Hello folks

In this new article, I want to talk about what has to be done during the implementation of Outlook Web App (OWA) in an Exchange 2010-Exchange 2003 coexistence scenario. Until all the mailboxes are transferred to the Exchange 2010 server, you have to make the legacy Exchange 2003 mailboxes reachable through an Exchange 2010 Client Access Server (CAS) machine (if you want only one connection address for all your mailboxes). Let me explain what my scenario is like and then talk about what happens during the transition from Exchange 2003 frontend server to Exchange 2010 CAS.

REQUESTING SSL CERTIFICATE FOR CAS SERVER AND IMPLEMENTING IT

In Day 1 and 2, we planned the Exchange 2007 organisation, put the related jobs in an order, prepare Active Directory and installed the first Exchange 2007 server, CAS server, for our organisation. In Day 3, i will request SSL certificate for CAS server and implement it through IIS administrative console. Also I will configure few other services that Exchange 2007 server offers to use this newly implemented SSL certificate.

Exchange Transition Scenario (2003 to 2007) – Day 2

ACTIVE DIRECTORY PREPARATION AND INSTALLATION OF CAS SERVER

At Day 1, we planned our new Exchange 2007 organisation and we decided the order of jobs we have to do. After  this introduction part, we can get into the real job; installation of Exchange 2007 servers. But first is first, i have to control the level of forest and domain infrastructures (whether they are 2003 native or not). In addition, i have to control the DC’s Operating Systems and Service Pack levels (whether they are at least Windows 2003 SP1 or not). After these controls, i logon one of the DC’s and install Powershell 1.0. After that, i put the Exchange 2007 DVD on the DVD-ROM drive and enter the commands (shown below)  in command line prompt. At this point, i want to give an advice to you that you should back up your Active Directory before these commands. Because we are changing / adding lots of attributes directly to the Active Directory schema with these commands (anything can happen). I prefer to wait enough time after each command, to be sure that everything is working well. Here are the commands:

EXCHANGE INFRASTRUCTURE AND PLANNING

Hi

In this article series, I will try to explain how we can move into an Exchange 2007 organisation from an Exchange 2003 organisation. I prefer to explain all the details and problems that I faced, instead of a regular presentation of installation. I faced lots of problems during the transition and I want to share all these problems and their solutions in this article series. First of all, I will explain  the existing Exchange 2003 infrastructure and then talk about the target Exchange 2007 infrastucture. I prefer not to use the redundancy technologies coming with Exchange 2007 to keep the transition simple. The old and the new organisations will be as simple as possible. During the planning and installation phases, Exchange Best Practise Analyzer (ExBPA) will be the biggest helping tool for us. We can see the problems in our existing Exchange infrastructure and also the problems of Active Directory with this little and handy tool. After solving the problems (if any), we will continue to build our new Exchange 2007 organisation step by step. more Read More
